Do USSSA bats lose their pop? ›

Unfortunately, all bats have a limited life, and at some point, your bat will lose its pop.

‍There is a clear distinction between USA and USSSA bats. USSSA bats are illegal in the Little League organization because they have “too much pop.” Removing these bats from the available list was primarily implemented as a safety issue.

USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) provides energy transfer bat regulations for leagues governed by USSSA. Every league, regardless of age, will follow a specific bat standard for their equipment regulations.

Wether the bat is a USSSA, USA, or BBCOR composite, we will always recommend to break the barrel in before you use it in a game. Breaking in the barrel through our process will loosen up that resin bond to give the barrel more performance and pop through the trampoline effect.

If it is a USSSA league you most likely can't swing an ASA only bat. You will need to swing with a USSSA stamp. The USSSA leagues I have seen using the mush ball use it to limit hitting distances and for "safety". In most cases these balls do not hit great with USSSA stamped bats.

Construction and Performance

Unlike BBCOR bats, USSSA bats are not subjected to the same trampoline effect limitations, giving players a more dynamic hitting experience.

Bats that are broken, altered or that deface the ball are illegal. Materials inside the bat or treatments/devices used to alter the bat specifications and/or enhance performance (e.g., shaving, rolling or artificially warming the bat barrel) are prohibited and render the bat illegal.

The first, simple test is to have your kid hold the bat straight out in front of them, parallel to the ground, with their dominant hand. If they can't keep the bat steady in this position for 20 seconds, then the bat's probably too heavy. Another test to try is evaluating your hitter's soft toss performance.

Either USABat Standard bats or BBCOR bats must be used at the Intermediate (50/70) Baseball and Junior League Baseball Divisions. At the Senior League Baseball Division, all bats must be meet the BBCOR standard.

Ages 4 to 6: Use a tee ball bat. Ages 7 to 10: Use a -12 to -8 Senior League bat. Ages 11 to 13: Use a -8 to -5 Senior League bat. Age 14 and older: MUST use a -3 BBCOR bat.

Composite bats do require a 6-step break-in period for optimal performance. If proper care of the bat isn't taken during the break-in period and over the life of the bat, it may result in premature breakage or lowered performance. So, there is data showing that the performance of composite bats improves as they are broken. Unfortunately, it takes 300-500 hits before a bat is fully broken-in, and many players are not willing to wait that long before bringing their composite bat to its full potential.
