Powerball Rules in the USA
Powerball is a lottery with a long, long history. This game has the same popularity as the famous MegaMillions (read about the differences between MegaMillions Vs. Powerball). It was launched for the first time in February 1988 and referred to as the “US Powerball Double Drums.” It became the first lottery game where two drums were used to raise the jackpot odds. In April 1992, the name was changed. Since then, everyone’s favorite lottery has been called the Powerball.
There are several key features that are typical of the lottery:
- The number of participating states is 45 plus D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
- The minimum age for players to take part is 18. However, in Nebraska, you must be over 19 years old, while in Louisiana, Iowa, and Arizona, the minimum age is 21.
- You can participate even if you are overseas.
- The minimum advertised Powerball jackpot is $20 million.
- Since April 2021, all tickets have included the Power Play option.
- A 10x multiplier in Power Play is not available at jackpots higher than $150 million.
- You can purchase the tickets at lottery agents, gas stations, grocery stores, and other stores all across the country. Besides, they are available online.
- There are a large number of Powerball (USA) syndicates that offer an improved chance of winning the prize.
Follow the rules to play Powerball:
- Choose 5 main numbers ranging from 1 to 69.
- Then pick your Powerball number, choosing between 1 and 26.
- Apply for the Quick Pick option if you want the numbers to be selected randomly.
- Add Power Play and Double Play if you like.
Powerball draws take place three times a week at Florida Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee. The results are available online on this page or on TV right after the draw.
Advanced Draws
There is a limit for the tickets purchased in advance in each participating state. Florida and South Carolina offer the best deal, with a maximum of 52 tickets for buying beforehand, while the limit in New Jersey is just 8. Anyway, check the lottery rules in your jurisdiction or consult the lottery provider in your area.
USA Powerball Payout and Taxes
The claim period for the Powerball prizes lies between 90 and 365 days, varying from state to state. You can check the back of your ticket. This information is often noted there. However, if you were extremely lucky to hit the jackpot, you would have just 60 days to choose between a lump sum and an annuity payment.
The rules for receiving prizes are rather simple.
Prize | How to get your prize in cash |
---|---|
$1 – $599 | Visit the retailer where you bought your winning ticket. You may also mail it or download it from the lottery site to request your amount. |
$600+ | Claim centers, as well as local district offices and headquarters, redeem prizes over $600. Some states may do it by mail, so check it out for your metro area if you are interested. |
Jackpot | First-prize winners are to get their jackpot at their state lottery headquarters. Before that, they must choose how the amount should be redeemed. This could be a lump sum of cash or a graduated annuity with 30 annual payments. |
The Powerball prizes are taxed, so get ready to make some compulsory payments.
You don’t need to pay if you win less than $600. Up to $5,000 must be reported to the Inland Revenue Service. Every prize over $5,000 is subject to federal taxation at a rate of 25%, but jackpot winners pay 39.6% of that.
As for state taxation, it depends on the metro area where you have played. The players from some states, including California, New Hampshire, Texas, and Washington, pay no state tax at all, while other metro areas set their own percentage between 2,9% and 8,82%. Besides, there are some special taxes in several locations:
- 5-20% for Puerto Rico
- 3,8% municipal tax for New York
You may also consult the Powerball payout and tax calculator to learn more about all the taxes and deductions.
