Baldur's Gate 3: How to Find the Githyanki Patrol (And What to Tell Them) (2024)

The first person to join the protagonist in the prologue of Baldur's Gate 3 is a githyanki named Lae'zel. She knows what it means to have a mind flayer parasite implanted in her brain, as do the rest of her people.

That's why Lae'zel is convinced that the party can find a cure by finding the local githyanki creche. Baldur's Gate 3 players can search for this cure even if they never speak to Lae'zel after the prologue ends, though they'll have a much easier time of it if they find her and bring her along. The first step to reaching this cure (and the first step in Lae'zel's personal quest) is to track down a local githyanki patrol.

Where to Find Zorru

Baldur's Gate 3: How to Find the Githyanki Patrol (And What to Tell Them) (1)

The first step to finding the gith patrol is to find a tiefling named Zorru. Lae'zel has discovered that Zorru encountered some of her people in the area, and so she asks the protagonist to track him down for information.

Zorru is in the Emerald Grove, along with the rest of the tiefling refugees. This means that if the tieflings move on from the grove or all die, players won't be able to speak with him. As it is, Zorru only has a single line of dialogue like most background NPCs unless Lae'zel is in the active party.

If Lae'zel is present, players can let her take the lead in the conversation for easy approval points. While she gets aggressive, this conversation won't turn violent even if players never step in. After this conversation, the location of the githyanki patrol will appear on their map. This location is southwest of the Waukeen's Rest inn and close to the mountain pass exit.

Players will also encounter the patrol by visiting this location even if they don't have Lae'zel. A dragon will fly overhead as the party approaches, and a tiefling named Ellyka will warn the protagonist to avoid continuing.

What Happens When Lae'zel Is Present

Walk just past Ellyka and a cutscene will play. The githyanki patrol destroys the wooden bridge to the north, and once the cutscene ends the patrol's red dragon will stand in the road to the Mountain Pass region. This means players must deal with the patrol if they want to reach Act Two without using the Underdark route.

If Lae'zel is in the active party, she'll leave the party and rush down to meet with the patrol. In the process, she'll dump all her items onto the protagonist, which can be very inconvenient if players have used her to carry a load of heavy items. This moment is especially odd since Lae'zel will rejoin the party after the conversation with the patrol.

Much like with Zorru, players can get some easy approval points with Lae'zel by letting her take the lead in the conversation, at least at first. However, things get tense when Kith'rak Voss mentions that he's out looking for the Astral Prism, the artifact Shadowheart has.

The most important decision comes after this revelation. If players tell Lae'zel to be honest, she'll mention the tadpole infection and Voss will tell the patrol to kill the party before they turn into mind flayers. If players pull out the artifact, Voss will accuse the party of being the thieves and order the patrol to kill them. If players choose the last option, the party will start the fight. Each choice may make entering the githyanki creche easier or harder, but in the short term it always means a fight. On top of that, Voss will always leave on his dragon.

The only way to end this encounter peacefully is with the Persuasion option. Luckily, the DC is only 10. If players pass it, Lae'zel will agree to help hunt down the artifact and both Voss and the patrol will leave.

As Voss leaves, an Insight check can reveal that he's not heading back to where he says he is. This means nothing in the short term, but players should keep this in mind as Lae'zel's companion quest continues. If players fight the patrol, they can get a map from the patrol's leader that points out the creche's location.

What Happens When Lae'zel Isn't Present

If Lae'zel isn't present, and if the protagonist isn't a fellow githyanki, Kith'rak Voss is much more hostile when the party approaches. Players must pass several skill checks if they want to get through the conversation peacefully.

The first choice comes when Voss wonders why he shouldn't attack the party immediately. Players can choose between Sleight of Hand, Insight, Intimidation, or Persuasion against a DC of at least 15 to convince him to back off. Next, Voss will use Detect Thoughts to try and probe the protagonist's mind, and players must pass a Wisdom check to avoid giving too much away. Finally, players must pass a Persuasion, Intimidation, or their own Detect Thoughts check to end the conversation on peaceful terms.

If players pull this off, Kith'rak Voss will invite the party to report to the nearby creche if they discover anything. This is how a party without Lae'zel can enter the creche without fighting. And if Lae'zel is in the party but wasn't present at the time, players can return to camp and update her about what happened.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on macOS, PC, and PS5.
